There are more than twice the number of webinars in this year's festival than last year's. This means you can attend a business event from your home, an internet café or the pub: any location that works for you.
There are also brand-new podcasts that cover a range of topics from starting a business, to business social responsibility, to the businesswomen who inspire us. This means you can learn or simply be inspired in any mobile setting, whether it's your car or the tram on the way to work.

Small to medium sized businesses (SMEs) are valuable contributors to Melbourne’s economy, but are also highly vulnerable to acute shocks and chronic stresses.
Council is proud to partner with Resilient Melbourne, B-Lab Australia & New Zealand, and leading universities in Melbourne to deliver a pilot project to help Melbourne’s SMEs gain a better understanding of their business and the type of business they want to become.
Participating SMEs will be paired with high performing university students who will undertake B-Lab’s ‘B-Impact Assessment.’ This assessment will help SMEs develop improved management plans and be better prepared for all types of adversity and opportunities in a world of rapid change.

If you export goods or services from Australia, it's important to be aware of your GST responsibilities so you can get your business activity statement (BAS) right the first time.
From 1 July 2017, small businesses with a GST turnover of less than $10 million will no longer be required to report:
*export sales
*other GST-free sales
Simpler BAS removes the need for you to report these amounts to the ATO on your BAS. However, you still need to keep records of exported goods or other GST-free sales. Exports from Australia are generally GST-free, but there are special conditions to be aware of. For example, if you don’t receive payment for your exports within 60 days, then GST could be charged.

From August 1, smokers will be banished from footpath dining areas, pub courtyards and beer gardens when food is being served.
But there are exceptions:
*Smoking will be allowed in restaurants and pubs with enough real estate to establish four-metre buffers between smokers and diners.
*Others can erect 2.1-metre-high cafe blinds.
*Smoking will also be permitted at times when food is not being served, unless the venue owner decides to ban smoking entirely.
If you believe that a business is breaching the tobacco laws you can contact Council’s Public Health unit on 9932 1000. Council has a role to play in educating business, and administering requirements under the Tobacco Act.
