The State Government last weekend announced their proposed design for the West Gate Tunnel Project.
The West Gate Tunnel Project is a project that will deliver an alternative to the West Gate Bridge.
The project will include:
- widening the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 lanes and include express lanes between the M80 and the West Gate Bridge, reducing weaving and merging that leads to traffic congestion.
- a tunnel from the West Gate Freeway to the Maribyrnong River and the Port of Melbourne which will take motorists and trucks underground and off residential streets, providing a more efficient freight route.
- a bridge over the Maribyrnong River, linking to an elevated road along Footscray Road will get people to where they need to go in the CBD north.
- state-of-the-art smart technology across the length of the project linking it to other freeway management systems across the city.
The State Government are hosting information sessions in Hobsons Bay this weekend. Project team members and technical specialists (during allocated times), will take you through a display of project materials including an interactive map, design maps, 3D artist impressions and factsheets for you to take home.
The Council will be considering the State Government’s ‘preferred design’ against the Council’s ‘adopted position’ that we worked on with our community at this Tuesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting. All are welcome to come along with the meeting starting at 7pm, Tuesday 11 April at the Altona Civic Centre, 115 Civic Parade, Altona.
We also encourage you to attend one of the State Government’s information sessions near you. There is no need to register attendance; you can just drop in at a time that suits you best.
