Before we get into the world of business, firstly an introduction to our new Council. On Wednesday 2 November Hobsons Bay City Council's new Council was announced, with seven Councillors elected for the four year term. Hobsons Bay is represented across three wards, Cherry Lake, The Strand and Wetlands. The new Mayor will be elected and announced on Friday 11 November.

This month we are pleased to share with you the upcoming Art & Industry Festival, a new festival event for the City of Hobsons Bay that takes place across the city 18-27 November. With the tagline of Art & Industry being to ‘celebrate our past and design our future’, the festival will celebrate and investigate the ever-changing industrial and manufacturing heartland of Australia based in the Melbourne’s western suburbs. As part of the program, we are hosting an industry speed networking session at The Substation, with a stunning photographic exhibition commissioned by Toyota as our backdrop. The event will be held on Wednesday 23rd November and is sure to be a great start to the day. It's aimed for businesses and industry professionals, further details below. We hope to see you there!

Hobsons Bay City Council invites you or a representative from your organisation to join us for a morning of networking, Art and Industry style, with the backdrop of the Toyota Australia photographic exhibition at the Substation in Newport.

Date: Wednesday 23 November
Time: 8.30am to 10am
Venue: The Substation, 1 Market Street, Newport

Hobsons Bay City Council director Bill Millard recently took a side trip during overseas leave to attend and speak at the International Economic Development Council, (IEDC) conference in Cleveland Ohio. While Cleveland might best be known as home to the NBL champs the Cleveland Cavaliers, it is also a city that has suffered through a critical slump in manufacturing and is trying to reinvent itself. Perhaps the major driver of reinvention has been the delivery of public projects in the city centre, including a brilliant convention centre, foreshore renewal, public square development and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Swinburne University of Technology has partnered with Shandong University Weihai (SDUW), Weihai Economic and Technological Development Zone (WZ) and the Australian Education and Management Group (AEMG) to establish a joint research centre in advanced manufacturing. The establishment of the joint centre was formally announced by the premier of Victoria, Mr Daniel Andrews, during his recent trip to Beijing in September.

Cloud Accounting Workshop - Thursday 10 November

Places are still available for the Cloud Accounting workshop being held this Wednesday night. The session will be presented by Robert Spralja of Inform Business Accounting, a local accountant, long term Altona resident and outsourced CFO who has helped many businesses utilise the power of the cloud to better manage their finances. Preparing to Win New Business Workshop - Friday 18 November

Cafe Providers Newport

Council is seeking expressions of interest from cafes in the Newport area interested in supplying beverages for an upcoming business event. It is planned that participating businesses would be able to provide coffee, tea and other standard beverages as takeouts from their café to event attendees between 7.30am and 8.30am on Wednesday 23 November; all beverages provided to attendees during this time will be paid for by the event. Tourism Strategy Consultation

Council is currently in the process of developing its’ new tourism and destination marketing strategy. Help Unmask a Local Hero

Nominations are now open for the 2017 Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year awards. This is your chance to recognise the achievements of our community’s unsung heroes. Nominees must be Australian citizens who live, work or study in Hobsons Bay. For further information go to the Hobsons Bay City Council website .
Nominations close at 5pm on Friday 2 December 2016. Awards will be presented on Australia Day 26 January 2017 at the Williamstown Town Hall.

With the year quickly coming to a close, the holiday season is just around the corner! Keep in mind that restricted trading still applies on Christmas Day, 25 December 2016. There will be no trader restrictions imposed on the substituted Christmas Day public holiday, 27 December 2016.
