Meet Nicky and Sam from A Flower Affair, a flourishing local florist with deep roots in Hobsons Bay. With a genuine love for creativity, flowers and people, they enjoy nothing more than getting to know their community and bringing customers’ ideas to life. From handpicked blooms grown by local growers to supporting schools and community fundraisers, A Flower Affair is all about connection, care and sharing a little joy through flowers.

Tell us a bit about A Flower Affair.
Nicky - Flowers are definitely in my genes. My parents were gardeners, and I studied floristry in Perth when I was 18. I fell in love with the mix of creativity and nature. While my kids were young, I dipped in and out of the industry, but when I moved to Melbourne I started working here and took over the business in October 2023. You could say it’s my happy place.
Sam - The shop originally started in Williamstown before moving to Newport. It’s one of the oldest florists around and we’ve been told it’s been operating for about 45 years – although we’re still trying to track down the original owners to confirm the full history.

How many people work here?
Nicky - There are four of us.

What do you love most about running your own business?
Nicky - The creative freedom. Setting goals, coming up with ideas and then seeing them come to life is really special. I also love being part of the community and helping bring customers’ ideas to life. And being surrounded by flowers every day definitely makes me happy.
Sam - Having control over all aspects of the business - from flower selection and creativity to deliveries and website design.

How does your business support other local businesses and/or the local community?
Nicky - We regularly donate flower vouchers to local community groups and schools to support their fundraising efforts.

What's your proudest achievement or milestone?
Sam - It will be finishing our renovations. We’ve already done a lot to make the space more functional and to create a minimalist, gallery-style feel so the flowers really shine.

What's your favourite flower at the moment?
Nicky - That’s a hard one, but right now I’m loving dahlias. They’re grown in Daylesford by Ruth at Wombat Ridge Farmstead. She handpicks them and delivers them to us herself, which makes them feel extra special.
Sam - Zinnias, from the same grower. They look like a little garden all on their own and they’re quite unique.

Ok, give us your local tips. Where do you like to shop?
Nicky - Say It Sister - it's such a cool shop.
Sam - I don't shop alot but I do like treating myself at Lavanya Spa. They're amazing.

Where do you like to eat?
Nicky - Hawkers Lane in Hall Street - the food is amazing.
Sam - Hawkers Lane for me too. I also like The Fifth Wine Bar - they have great food and drink options.

Where would we find you when you're out and about?
Nicky - At The Fifth in Newport, or out with my kids.
Sam - Usually out delivering flowers. If you see the van, come and say hi – or toot your horn and give me a wave!

If you needed a last minute Valentine gift, where would you get it from and what would it be?
Nicky - Flowers from A Flower Affair of course
Sam - A voucher from Lavanya Spa in Williamstown
